I used to use door skin but the quality seemed to tank a few years ago, I found it unbelievable that the store would have the audacity to sell the stuff, they have no shame. Quality is down all over: recently I've even had BS1088 split after only a couple of years in the open. Next time I will pay for the Lloyds stuff.

Baltic Birch on the other hand, provided it's the real thing (5 x 5 sheet size is a good clue) is heavy but very good quality. I cut a piece once at 12 deg to the surface, sanded and varnished it, just to see how good it was. It looked great, like a piece of marquetry with straight margins between the laminations, almost invisible glue lines and interesting light reflection patterns fro the various grain orientation. I am tempted to use it as a breast-hook capping piece on a canoe.
