Hi Bryan
Yes, I used the 2333 brushing thinner, but not to wipe the boat down after sanding - the @$#@$ instructions on the can did not list the 2333 reducer as suitable for wipedown, so I thought it would not work. None of the Y2316 reducer that the can listed for wipedown was available in Smithers, and I did not have time to wait for it to be shipped. I have since run into other instructions which say that 2333 is ok for wipedown. If the &^%&% instructions on the can included the 2333 reducer as an appropriate wipedown after sanding, I might have avoided this mess.
At any rate, I used toluene for wipedown after I washed with detergent and water because I suspected oil contamination. The toluene doesn't seem to be the problem because on the last coat, I did not wipe the hatch covers with toluene, I just cleaned them up with detergent and water after sanding, and they have the same problem as the hull.
At any rate, it is back to the drawing board for me. Later this summer, I will sand back as far as necessary and try again using the recommended thinner for cleanup after sanding, and only clean water for sanding. I have an information request in to Interlux regarding the best process for the overhaul, so I will see what they have to say.
It is good to hear that other kayak builders have had good results with Perfection Plus. Hopefully, I will do likewise the next time around.
Best regards,
Allan Edie
: Hi Allen,
: Perhaps in this thread it has already been mentioned, but I assume
: you used the Y2333N brushing thinner when you applied the
: Perfection Plus varnish? I also use the brushing thinner to wipe
: the boat down which is one of the recommendations by Interlux. I
: use the West systems close nap foam roller pads followed with a
: foam brush for tipping, and have never had a problem after 6
: boats. I mix the varnish the recommended ratio and add about 1/4
: part of the thinner. You have to be careful not to load up the
: roller too much or you will have a hard time preventing sags and
: runs. I also usually replace the foam tipping brush about
: half-way through a coat application because they get too loaded
: up with varnish. The way you describe your problem I think you
: were getting air pockets from the roller which to me indicated
: not enough thinner.
