Back in September I saw Malcolm Schweizer's announcement of his design and launch of the Malco SUP on the KBBB. I had been seriously looking to build a standup paddleboard for about a year, as my coastal paddling buddies in Santa Cruz are all standup paddlers and I wanted to give the sport a try. Having already built a couple of Pygmy Arctic Terns and a Redfish King, I was excited to give building the Malco a try. I ordered the CNC cut spar/rib kit from wood surfboard supply, and I used Malcolm's building blog as a guide. Many thanks to Malcolm for the great advice by email and in person at the Sacred Craft show in Santa Cruz. It's made from alaskan yellow cedar, heart redwood, western red cedar, paulownia and Phillipine mahogany. I used the hollow rail method, which was a bit of a challenge to wrap hand-beveled 1/4"x1/4" strips around the rails, but it all worked out. Two layers of 3.25 oz glass on top and one on the bottom. 11'1" long and weighs 34 pounds. So far it's comfortable to stand on in the pond. I should have it out on salt water this weekend. Having lurked here for years, it's fun to post a project that I learned about on this great resource.
