Hi guys! I haven't posted in a while, but I'm still here.
I'm thinking of removing the glass from my kayak's exterior and re-glassing it. I need to repair a bunch of bumps and bruises and I'm not too happy with the way the colors of the WRC have changed. The nice contrasting colors I had when I first built it have faded/darkend into each other. It still looks nice, but nowhere near as good as it did when I first built it. If it was only the bumps and bruises, I would just repair and refinish, but the thought of bringing the color back makes me want to re-glass completely.
Does anyone know of a way to keep the wood from changing color? Is there something I can use to treat the wood before I re-glass it to keep the colors from changing? I think it's mainly caused by a chemical reaction with the resin; I don't think it's all from UV exposure. I've been told about a wood treatment that prevents this, but I don't know what it is.
Also, I might just lighten the kayak a bit by replacing the 6oz. glass I used on the hull with 4oz. S-glass. It's more expensive, but it'll provide similar strength with less weight.
Thank you in advance,
Pete
