There are always alternatives :)

Actually I like Nick's finger reliefs and use them on my internal bungie hatches, lets you somewhat easily get a finger under a corner of the hatch to lift it. Will I suppose depend on how strong the magnets are if that'll work or not. I'd think the webbing loop would have to be fairly large if you only had one to try to overcome the pull of all the magnets at once lifting from the center, might be easier to pry open the hatch lifting from one side? Nice thing about the reliefs is they are simple to make, I use a 1 1/4" (?) round sanding wheel on the drill, set at an angle it cuts the cedar pretty quick.

Or....look in the sailboat and general boating catalogs, lots of folding handles you can buy what would be pretty slick.

Nice thing about these pulls or reliefs is they are flush and won't cause water coming over the deck to splash up onto you, nice thing in rough water when it's chilly out.
