Hi Bill,
That could be catechu, I think it can be made from acacia. It used to be used for tanning sails as well as leather. On cotton, it comes out that darker red which was oddly invisible, or very hard to see, after twilight, good for pirates or customs to get away of sneak up on other ships.
Iron in the mix makes for black.
