You can tell it's wood but there isn't much grain showing. You may be able to reduce the exposure time to add some contrast. If I remember correctly, I waited an hour before rinsing with water or bicarb but my main goal in this test was to make sure the epoxy would cure properly. As Bill mentions in a post further down in the thread, the addition of tannins helps the ebonizing and I did this with tea bags. The wood got quite black so I don't see a need to add the bark material he mentions. It's my understanding that cedar does not have much tannin naturally and I have no idea if different parts of the grain have different levels but that seems a possibility. If so, you may get more grain contrast by leaving out the tea bags or the bark that Bill mentions.
I'm seriously considering using the ebonizing process on my next build but I will run a few more tests considering the issues (time & tannins) I've mentioned above.
