Hey Bryan,
I agree with the Green Valley Boat Works page. I tried different concentrations and different number of layers of 2 different stains, black and macassar.

I wanted black as it's a BLACK Pearl. (those that go for white or red(!) Black Pearls are strangely misguided! ;¬) ) The macassar colour looked a bit brown so I went for the black stain which ended up a bit strong perhaps (2 coats of 50% dilution) . . . on the regular coloured cedar and looks brown on the lighter 'figured' cedar I used on the deck. (The central strip is ash in the photo above.) This had lighter areas that didn't take the stain so readily.
The other problem I had was small areas that were still covered with the epoxy used to glue the strips together and left over after the sanding. Difficult to pick up until you put on a first coat of stain. These I touched in with some oil paint.
(wondered about some destructive testing of the test piece to see just how strong the layup is)
