I've only been to the U.S. Virgin Islands once, on a Carnival cruise. As typical tourists from Upstate NY, the wife and I opted to take one of the sponsored tours: a catamaran out to some sunken cargo ship and snorkel a bit. Free rum & punch on the way back. 'Course, then they opened up the "who wants to buy a shirt?!" routine after they got us all snookered, but I'm still convinced I drank enough free rum to owe them two shirts.
Anyway, I distinctly remember the crew discussing our comments about the surroundings being heaven. Their riposte went along the lines of "a McD's Happy Meal is like $10. A tomato is expensive. A gallon of milk is $8. A bottle of rum? $3".
I'm surprised there aren't more "accidents" down there...
