Off Topic: Bulkhead for existing kayak

Hi
I recently purchased a kayak but it has only one bulkhead and wanted to install a fwd bulkhead. In order to get a sizing for the bulkhead I marked the outside of the hull at the place where the bulkhead was to go with 1" intervals and using a spirit level measured from the level to the hull at the intervals. Results of the plot were poor so thought I'd see if anybody had good way of going about this!
