Hi John,
If you scarf it on the 2", the loss is 16". That will work just as well as scarfing the 6". It's a bit more awkward cutting the boards 'on edge' but you can clamp two or three together, staggered for least loss, and cut them that way. If your saw hasn't got that much cutting depth/height, rip them into 3" boards first. The least number of cutting operations, the less likelyhood of variations.
