I had good luck making a coaming of fir, which you may be able to get cheap. I wrapped 3/32 strips in a moist towel for half an hour. I had this crazy idea I'd alternate it with redwood (similar to WRC), but, the strips just snapped, even when moistened over night. I didn't think to try the heat gun, but, I don't expect it would have helped much.
