Skin-on-Frame: Bungee or lines through gunwales?

I think some of you have done this, including Yost type boats with 1 1/2 inch gunwales. Any concerns about weakening with softer woods? I had to go with Radiata pine (not really sure how I feel about that). Sealing -- might do OK with Lexel and your latigo cords. If I do bungee, though, I wonder if the area between skin and gunwale will be a seepage area...?
