What bill said with the addition of use whatever is locally available in large quantities (so you can pick out the good boards) with good straight clear stock that's cheap.
It mostly depends on where in the country you are. I go over to British Columbia regularly so I just stop off at a saw mill and get clear WRC straight off the sorting line, its pretty darn cheap that way, if you are out on the east coast, probably not so much, so use something like pine or spruce.

Another tip is to look at the 2x12 boards, they cost more, but come from older trees that are more likely to have clear straight grain.

To see if its straight grained, look at the top and on the side of the board, if all the growth ring lines stay parallel to the edges in both views its straight grain, look at a few boards and you can see pretty quickly which ones have run out.
