Ok now we've got some information. Exactly what "island chains" are you talking about? Lake Huron? Any of the Great Lakes could get dicey very quick in a short fat kayak, except in the most protected areas. I would say 15 is rock bottom minimum, and 16 would be much better if there are any exposed areas. More details on your intended use would help even more. You may be better off with two kayaks, one for fishing and one for camping trips depending on what exactly you want to do.
