A little common sense please.

I'm merely offering an alternate perspective for his consideration. Several people have posted about the Seabee and other good options already. Certainly generations of paddlers have grown up on SOF boats, and jumping right to that is a good option, but their are others.

You are of course correct that stability is a function of design. SOF boat are generally, not always, but generally lower in volume and lacking in primary stability. This often gives them an unstable feel which can be very hard for a new paddler to adjust to, especially if they do not have a community to support them.

He didn't mention the type of water that he wants to paddle in, only that he has little experience and wants to fish. The Seabee is a good option for this, but not the only one. A new paddler, playing with a SOF on a familiar pond is not a huge safety risk. A new paddler, using a SOF without safety training and paddling partners in big open water is another tragic news story waiting to happen.

You are exaggerating the cost and time savings. An experienced builder will certainly be able to save money and time vice building a S&G or Strip boat. However, a S&G can be built for $700 in 90 to 100 hours by a neophyte. It is common for a new builder spend as much time and money on their first SOF as a S&G.

No one has mentioned safety to this new paddler. SOF boats do not have bulkheads, so he needs to plan on floats and/or a seasock. These are important features that require some training and/or experience to use properly.
