: plywood takes very well to end grain sanding and even after
: boiling/soaking, the end that I sanded retained its silky smooth
: feel. Also, with the soaking, the 17mm has increased to about 18
: but that is certainly nothing to be concerned with!!

The ply is a little thicker than is called for on the plans, 1/2" would be lighter and plenty strong, specially using a heavy wood like birch.
