That's funny, I almost took some pictures just for this discussion but decided I pretty much knew what caused the issue. I didn't build it to design and I didn't protect the wood against any water damage. It was only supposed to last one short season... it gave me two long seasons. I'm lucky it didn't happen on the water because that would have made for an awkward walk/swim back to the car. Not really a safety issue as I don't believe the boat would have collapsed in the water, but it would have been much less convenient.
