There is a secondary advantage to adding the foam, float bags etc., if the boat is swamped, filled with water, there is alot less water to pump out of the boat so you can get back in and continue paddling. It's amazing how much water a SOF will hold without any floatation in it, you'll pump for what seems like days trying to get it all out .
