Skin-on-Frame: attaching coaming

Here's where I'm at with my Gentry Disko Bay Kayak. I have skinned and put one coat of paint on the skin, entirely covering the boat (ie no holes in the skin for the coaming). I painted it in the hope that the weave wouldn't pull out when I sewed on the coaming.

The coaming is laminated fir, and I am going to install a 1/4 inch lip. How much should the lip extend beyond the coaming to have a good grip on the skirt?

Once the coaming is done, I was going to drill holes in it and stitch it directly to the skin. I was under the impression that the greenlanders only attached their coaming to the skin, not directly to the frame. So I left out any stanchions.

Seeing where I am at right now, does anyone recommend a technique for attaching the coaming? My idea was to put it directly onto the skin in the cockpit area, resting on top of the middle two frames. I would then cut a hole to about an inch of the inside the coaming, and sew the skin to the inside of the coaming and paint to waterproof. Are there any problems with this that I am not anticipating?
