I am about to start my 3rd kayak, and I am going back to bevelled edges as opposed to bead and cove. Bead and cove went on the forms very nicely, but it was a PITA to make the strips.
On my first boat, I ripped the strips square then used a plane to bevel as I stripped the boat. I recently read that if you put a few degrees of angle on the table saw while ripping the strips, you get a bevel that is pretty close to what you need and the hand planing is minimal. So, I am thinking about how to do this, and it seems that you need to flip the wood while ripping. If you just rip away, you get the same angle on both faces, right? I am thinkng you have to alternate ends on the 1x6 when ripping.......
I want to keep track of the strips as I rip them so I can match the grain as I strip. Maybe I can mark the end of the 1x6 with a diagonal line so I can keep the strips in order.
Any pointers?
