At the risk of coming across immodest, I wrote a couple of articles for The Masik online journal on the Qajaq USA web page that are a review of the instructional texts on building a traditional bent-rib type kayak and what materials to use and how to acquire them. Mark Starr's book for sure, and I think Robert Morris' as well (it's out of print- you'd need to find a copy at the library.) show using a keyhole-sized cockpit.

I think a little bit of poking around looking into a traditional SOF and you'll be hooked...
