I've done it both ways. Colored epoxy makes an adequate base-coat for the Perfection. I prefer to use a coat (or two) of Primekote first. It's a high-build primer so it's much easier to sand and really helps fair the surface. It really has to be thinned with 2333N though. At least 25%. I've done as much as 40% depending on shop conditions.
