"Ideal" is a subjective word. When in my teens and early twenty's we'd never take our canoes on the ponds. They were strictly used on the sea coasts. We thought that the ponds were too benign and besides, you couldn't see anything when you looked into the water. The coast offered nooks and crannies to explore and the crystal clear water offered a great view of the sea floor. Wave action - including clapotis - was relished. I even built an SOF pontoon or outrigger that we bolted to the canoe for extra stability. Of all the times I'd paddled on the salt water and often in waves, I'd never once experienced a capsize. It wasn't until a number of years later that I read in a book how the Canadian Canoe was not suitable for open water conditions - whodathunkit?

I managed to find an image on Google Earth of the actual beach we used to launch from. If you followed a straight line out the bay, you'd eventually hit Iceland. Which means that's the wide open North Atlantic just outside the mouth tof the bay. To the left is Bell Island and we've canoed along the massive cliffs over there as well.
