Hi Ancient Kayaker,
What I initially did was hot glued strip stubs on the sides and bottom of the hull when the deck was off, to be a kind of a back stop for the bulkhead, which worked perfectly BUT I could not fit in properly to do the glueing. I could have glued the bulkhead in place on the hull portion before putting on the deck BUT I would encounter the same problem after installing the deck. Underneath the deck portion of the bulkhead would still have to be glued in place.
