Not having a lip isn't a problem, on boats other than kayaks a coaming is also often used to keep water out of the boat, they never have lips on them and work fine.

I'd consider making the coaming upright thicker than usual so you could comfortably put your weight on your hands grasping the coaming, putting all your weight on an average 1/4" thick coaming upright wouldn't be comfy on the hands.
