: any reason to make them larger?

Only if you need to put something in there that is too big for the size you have now. I don't need to put anything bigger than my lunch in mine, so my hatches are a bit smaller than most. :)

I am also very keen on the idea of allowing the shape of the strips to dictate the shape of the sides of the hatches. I think it looks a lot neater that way.
