You've got a kayak/canoe, if you don't have a dozen or so straps you're not trying very hard :)

I must have 50, we take lots of group trips.

Standard has always been, around the bar, over the boat and back around the bar. If you're using J cradles, around the top of the cradle, around the boat and around the bar. Have to always include the bar in case something breaks.
