Strip: Carbon in the cocpit: why?

Other than aesthetics, is there a reason to put a layer of carbon fiber weave in the area where you sit? Is is abrasion resistance, more strength where most of the bacon is sittin', or something else? Found a lot folks doing it, but few saying why.
