I prefer to use no straps at all... Out of sight, out of mind :)

However, on my hardshells and non folding SOF's, I always strap to the cradle, and around the bars, and check everything, including
bars / towers / fixed gutters at every stop. Call me old fashioned, but I refuse to use the type of towers that attach
at the doors on gutterless cars. I simply don't trust them.

But I must admit that I haven't used bow / stern lines in nearly forty years and many thousands of miles with no problems.
