G'day Scott,
I'm also a high school tech teacher. we have a cnc, 3d printer and a couple of lasers. Another cool project is a timber surfboard or sup. we purchased some plans from timeless surf company which are easy to follow and they have a support forum. Designing and producing a fin/skeg is a fun cad modelling and manufacturing project as well.
