It depends how you define long and short and depends how you define fast and slow.

When I did a similar exercise to the one Jeff did, I got very similar results.

I found that a 12 ft kayak begins to have a disadvantage well below the speed that most recreational paddlers can maintain.

A 15ft kayak does not begin to fall behind an 18 ft kayak until you reach speeds that most recreational paddlers rarely achieve.

You need to be fairly athletic and determined to get to the sort of speeds where a 21 ft kayak has an advantage over a 15ft or 18ft.

We all have different expectations and capabilities, and while some people need a longer kayak and some will be happy in a shorter one, there are a huge number of recreational paddlers who fall into the range where about 15ft is the magic number.
