As most of you know, this fall I've been building a solo canoe as a retirement present for my father-in-law, Steve. He worked 36 years as a surveyor with the NHDOT. I just wrapped up the canoe and moved it out of the shop. It took only 55.75 hours to build but it was spread over 10 weeks. Damage from TS Irene took me out of the shop for a while. It's a pretty "green" boat. The wood is mostly local to northern New Hampshire (save for a few accent strips of dark chocolate western redcedar I had laying around the shop that needed to be used up). The black cherry came off our camp property in Millsfield, NH where Steve grew up. I used the nut and seed-based Ecopoxy throughout and was very impressed with it. It's finished with few coats of a traditional marine varnish (Epifanes - his choice). The transom stern is for his electric trolling motor. I think the battery weighs almost as much as the boat. I can just image the small ponds he'll be lugging it into...
