: I'm starting a new build (a Guillemot) and have some design ideas
: in mind. I'm planning to try the ebonizing technique Bill H.
: posted about a couple of months ago for the darker areas but I
: also want to make some areas lighter. I know I could use a
: different wood species to accomplish this but I'm wondering
: about the use of a water-based stain (I know oil stains
: interfere with the epoxy curing). I used a Benjamin Moore
: product (Arborcoat) to stain my house siding this summer and it
: got me thinking about its suitability for a kayak. Benjamin
: Moore calls it an alkyd/acrylic product.
: Does anyone know for certain that this won't work with epoxy?

Btw, pretty much have to pre-stain the strips if you're going to use ebonizing in addition to stain, from what I've heard from the few people that have used it on kayaks, it tends to bleed across strips.
Then it requires very closely fitted strips since the ebonizing is mostly a surface treatment, any large amout of sanding or planing will remove much of the color.
