Continuing with the Lee Valley love I have one of these: http://www.leevalley.com/US/wood/page.aspx?p=33001&cat=1,43072,43078&ap=1 I got it used from a garage sale.
It makes the plane blade perfectly sharp on the first try. No fuss.

Also, you can pretty much skip all the micro abrasives and sand paper etc if you get some nice honing compound:

I just rub it onto scrap MDF like a crayon and use it to hone all my tools to a mirror edge. I resisted for a while because I thought the shiny tools were pointless, but after trying it I found out the edge lasts twice as long and cuts amazingly well.

The nice thing about working on MDF is that you can sharpen into the edge of the blade so you don't have to deal with the bur. If you then catch and gouge the MDF you aren't exactly out much. It also works great for gouges, just carve a groove with the gouge into the MDF, apply honing compound, rub the tool into the groove and tada you just honed the entire edge of your gouge in one go. I also use dowel coated in the stuff to hone the inside of round tools. Best sharpening product I ever bought.
