Yup, I went back and forth on how big to make the cockpit. He is not very flexible anymore, and was concerned about entry/exits. I ended up with a really huge cockpit. It is easy to get in and out of, and he can reach/stow a lot of fishing gear. The down side is that you get pretty wet from spray and paddle drips. If he needs it, I can always make a half-skirt to cover the front.
