: One of the downsides of getting engaged while living in a condo is
: that ideas like "Well, I'll just put the kayak on that
: wall, it'll look great" can now be vetoed. Given the cost
: of renting storage, I'm considering going with a three piece
: sectional I can stick in the storage unit when not paddling.
: Anybody ever do this? Any resources on how to do it? I saw a thread
: on some Scandinavian forum where a guy converted his kayak. It
: appears like it would be much easier to build it that way in the
: first place, and given the hull's not done yet I think I have
: the option.
I am planning on cutting my stripper into a 3-piece once I finish glassing and joining the hull. This should happen in the next couple of weeks, if all goes well.
Here's the best resource I have found so far: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lgx72uHamI0
I plan to use a latch system to join the sections, so they'll each be completely sealed and for ease of use. I'm debating now as to what material to use for the bulkheads. They need to be fairly strong, so I would guess that plywood might be a good choice (or cedar strips) and maybe lighter than a strong enough layup of just fiberglass alone? I could be wrong there and would appreciate any suggestions.
The other problem I will have with my Njord boat is that in order to get three 6-foot sections the front joint will be nearly a foot farther forward than where I would ideally want a bulkhead, to brace my feet on and keep cockpit volume low. I suppose I could fill that extra space with foam blocks ($$ would add up) or add an extra bulkhead to create an additional hatch area (would add too much weight). Or just forget about having equal length sections.
I'll let you know how my progress goes...
