I have had great success and no problems using normal PVA wood glue for the vertical risers.

I put glue on all the surfaces and then heat the glue with the heat gun. When the glue begins to bubble, I fit the riser in place and the glue behaves almost like contact cement. It turns the PVA into quick setting glue.

With the right amount of glue and the right amount of heat, all of the risers can be glued in place in one session. (Although I usually get bored and take a break to do a couple of other small jobs along the way.)
