Like the others said: use hardwood, preferably air-dried. I usually build mine using 1/8" x 5/16" laminations, bent dry with no heat. I use ash, black cherry, black walnut and basswood. In the picture is my daughter's SOF with a basswood/walnut coaming. Same build as on a stripper: basswood risers with a laminated lip. The lip was sanded down to about an 1/8" thick.
