: Hello All,
: I contacted Tom at Feather Canoes to buy full size patterns for
: making station molds on the Wee Lassie. The "full size
: patterns sold on his site turns out to be
: half patterns which require flipping the pattern over to trace the
: other half. This I have found to be the main source of error in
: making the station molds.
: I have made these station molds twice already and the molds are off
: 1/8th" to3/16th" and my centerline is also off (pencil
: thickness and flipped incorrectly, if your off you are OFF).
: I will now attempt it for the third time. This time I think I have
: figured out how to do this and eliminate some steps that
: contribute to the errors. When measuring the forms off of his
: book Feather Canoes.
: When measuring the half molds as illustrated to the right giving
: only a half mold, MEASURE TO THE LEFT ALSO! This will give me a
: full station mold and not have to flip the half mold to trace
: and
: make a FULL station mold. This way the centerline and sheerline
: should be perfect. My expertise in "sanding to the
: line" is now good due to the assistance I received from
: forum members.
: My next set of station forms should be near perfect.
: I wish I could show some photos. It would be worth a big horse
: laugh. To accomplish the overhang at the stems, I placed 2 short
: strongbacks on top of my existing strongback. I'm kind of close
: to the ground
: so I may have to do my building on a little high chair.
: Douglas
: Photos of my completed first build and this mess is coming. My
: first build is a Panache, at least it's what I attempted to
: build. I don't know what it is now. I hacked and butchered on
: this boat for 12 years part-time.
I have no experience with what you are encountering, I purchased the full sized plans for my first project, but might I suggest perhaps photocopying the half on some clear acetate and then cutting out the edge so you can use it as a template? The clear acetate will make it easier to line up after you flip it.
