What many people don't realize is that wooden canoes and strip-built canoes used to be a highly commercial enterprise. Old Town Canoe started out making wood and canvas canoes and continue offer them http://www.oldtowncanoe.com/canoes/classic_wood/otca_16.html. These were very quickly made and quite inexpensive. There are still people building the full wood/canvas style canoes and some builders don't do the canvas and cover the boats with glass. They are no longer particularly inexpensive.
The young prince is looking at a canoe made by Walter Walker. That particular boat is on exhibit at the Canadian Canoe Museum. That again was produced using a somewhat mass-production commercial based process that was relatively common at one time. Walter Walker was the last living builder who had produced canoes in a factory using that particular technique. It makes a very nice boat and would be fun to try some time.
