For the inner stem just use cedar, much easier to work and impact resistance is not needed in the interior. I would save that ash for the exterior stems.
Btw - I used small screws to attach the inner stem and then removed them as I progressed upward. The hot glue idea is excellent. Can anybody say "next time I'll...."
