I have always built up my external stems from hardwood strips about 2 to 3mm thick. They only need a bit of encouragement from the heat gun to bend enough. I do one layer at a time and allow plenty of time for the glue to set between strips.

Usually I use hardwood like ash or jarrah, whichever colour contrast with the hull. However only the outer layer need to be hardwood to get the resistance to denting.
