Readability of any measurement scale is purely a matter of design. We've a balance scale no one can read.

As a science teacher I wanted to find metric only tape measures. I haven't been able to find any. I even looked through hardware stores in China. Everything was metric and inches-- I guess that's because of the international clout of the Ivory Coast and the wooden boat builders of the United States.

A friend of mine used to argue the standard anti-metric rant: 'You'd need all new tools--including hammers and screwdrivers. Doors would no longer be 'normal dimensions' (like 2-8 by 6-8,) and the metric system is a conspiracy between Napoleon and the Communists.'

(I've designed all kinds of metric scales that print out very accurately on laser printers. If there's any interest I'll post them and share them. I even have one 5 meters long that we print out sideways on legal paper, tape together, laminate; and can read on video frames--even out of focus).
