For the paddle holders on the BP's I've built I like to use a modified Allbright knot. I tie off the tails for an even more secure knot. If the 3/16" polyester cord I use is tied tight it becomes quite stiff and doesn't fold over.

BTW: This loop is only for holding a paddle on the deck or for dragging the kayak quickly out of the water at the beach. They are NOT carrying handle. I've seen commercial ones break and watch the kayak plummet to the ground. Usually over a rock for some reason... I always have people carry the boats by the boat itself. A safety toggle on a single line should be used on the ends. If you're in wild water, you want something that you can grasp with cold hands and fingers would not get trapped in. It needs to come past the end and spin freely. Your body and the boat should be able to twist independently of each other. This is a rule I've broken in the past...
