: Merry Christmas everyone..... I wonder if you builders of the
: expodition Gilly are able to get your wrc beed and cove strips
: to bend to the forms without using cheater strips. I have been
: using a heat gun but still having a lot of trouble. My strips
: are 1/4 inch. I am wondering if I need to use steam and am not
: sure of the best way to get it. I am resisting cheater strip
: because it looks like it would be difficult to use with the beed
: and cove strips. Any thoughts? Joe
I'm not sure how different the 'Expedition' is from the standard Guillemot but I used a single cheater strip on each side of the bow (~12" long) and stern (~8") right after the sheer which pretty much eliminates the need for much upward bending in any subsequent strips. I used a 3/8" strip for the sheer which made it easier to bend, then installed the second strip, making sure the ends were within an inch of the sheer (I was using 1" wide strips). Once it was in place, I clamped a short strip to the sheer and marked the shape using a drafting compass to trace the curve. If the piece you mark already has the cove, you can add the bead after cutting with sandpaper or a plane.
