: I could be wrong, but I think I recall someone using southern
: yellow pine for strips, and being very happy with the results.
: This was a while back, and the memory fades a bit. But even with
: the shortcomings you cite, it may still be an acceptable option.

: The larger pieces of yellow pine sold for construction use (2x8 and
: 2x10 etc) tends to have fewer knots than smaller (2x4) cuts, so
: you can rip longer sections which are knot free, and then scarf
: them together for long, knot-free strips.

: Generally the cure for weight is to go with thinner strips.

: I get the various, generic white wood construction lumber called
: SPF (spruce, pine, fir) and use a few 1x4s or 1x6s when i am
: cutting my cedar. I use this cheaper wood for my setup and first
: few strips. Those strips are used for setting up the forms,
: wedges, and various other miscellaneous tasks during
: boatbuilding, allowing me to get more useful strips from the
: more-expensive cedar.

Hi Paul,

Southern Yellow Pine is pretty heavy, good boat building wood but would make for a pretty heavy kayak. You can only go so thin on the strips.
