Ric,
Did you consider drilling the whole at more of an angle which would make the tube stay flush to the inside of the deck and also increase the surface area for the sleeve to bond to?

: I brought the glass sleeves right through the deck and finished
: them on the deck side. So there is glass running through the
: full cross section of the deck. I flared the hole a bit on the
: deck side and then fluffed out the sleeve and taped it to the
: deck. I put a bunch of tape on the deck around the openings
: because the epoxy ran through the hole and would not stay where
: I wanted it otherwise. I think bringing the sleeve through the
: deck makes for a stronger unit than if the sleeves end on the
: inside of the deck. The black circles you see in the photo are
: something I probably did not need to have bothered with: I
: followed the old recommendation of always "drill, fill
: (epoxy) and drill" In other words I drilled the holes
: oversize, filled them with epoxy and then drilled the to the
: final, smaller size. This protects the wood from water
: infiltration but I kind of doubt it is necessary when the 'glass
: sleeve is there acting as a "spacer" to allow an epoxy
: layer to form over the cut surface of the hole.
: One other clarification, I used two layers of masking tape around
: the hole on the deck side. One on the bare deck, then I fluffed
: and splayed out the 'glass sleeve, then put a second layer of
: tape on to hold the glass down. The layer on the deck kept all
: that extra sleeve that had to be removed from bonding to the
: deck. I just wanted a tiny ring of the sleeve tp bond in the
: immediate area around the hole.
