I've bought some 'SEA-LECT Designs Pop-Out Deck Plate' but haven't installed them in a boat yet. They look like a good bet, IMO- secure lock and reasonably easy to open once unlocked. (I think I saw them mentioned on Bjorn Thomasson's site somewhere?)

I tried some Beckson pry-out plates, but even with a loop I don't think I could open them very easily-definitely not underway. My experience with screw plates (on sailboat) was that any grit would cause big problems, and you need a tool to unscrew them most of the time, if they are tightened fully. Stronger hands may make the difference.

Opening a hatch behind me (on aft deck) would require some more work on the yoga, I think!.

BTW, SeaLect also makes 'socks' to fit inside deck plates.
Sea-Lect is wholesale/manufacturer AFAIK, but I was able to get a good price and service from kayakproshop, AKA Olympic Outdoor Center.
