Personally I hate the idea of filling gaps with wood slivers, especially big ones ... because no matter how good a match I try to get it always looks like a sliver of wood shoved in a crack. So ... I use epoxy mixed with wood flour and cabosil. I make sure the mixture is darker than the wood. I mask around each gap, stuff it in and flatten it out with a putty knife. Requires virtually no sanding ... usually.
